A Safe Place in the Days of Evil

November 18, 2015

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91v1) What beautiful words and a wonderful promise for those who are walking with the Lord! On a personal level, the words of Psalm 91 have been my reservoir in recent times as I have been in and out of hospitals. “For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” (Verse 11) Indeed I have known the Lord’s protection and caring arms around me in some very distressing moments. Who have we but the Lord to call upon on, in times of illness, loneliness – or just trouble in general? Dearest loved ones may have passed away and there are very few remaining on this earth who really care deeply for us in the way that they did… but thank God for His promises to you and I: “He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.” (Verse 15)

On a global level, people are suffering terribly because of the horrors of international terrorism. What comfort they could avail of to sustain them, if only they could put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour! Does this mean that the Christian will never have to face illness, tragedy, or any kind of trouble? Of course he will! “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.” (Psalm 34v19) Ultimately we will be delivered. Life’s short day, with its pain, weariness, times of anguish and yes, joy too, will soon be finished for each one of us… but for those who own the Lord as Saviour, there is a better day – a day of eternal joy in His Presence, like no joy we have ever experienced on this earth.

“O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.” (Psalm 34v8)

Physically speaking, there really is no safe place in this world. It is true that some countries and some places are safer than others. Above is a lovely painting (by my dear Mum who passed away just last year). It appears to be a tranquil Scottish loch and castle with a snow-capped mountain in the background. I imagine myself walking in this peaceful scene… but is anywhere on earth safe? Only Jesus can give us that deep sense of peace which fills the heart, as a consequence of His indwelling Presence.

Spiritually speaking, there is only one safe place in this world; that is “in the secret place of the most High.” When He owns every part of us: body, soul and spirit; when we “walk in the light as he is in the light,” only then can we “abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” We may be shot or bombed and wounded – or even killed but for those who love and serve Him… nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8v35-39)
